SUMMARY:Exhibition: Material Lab
DESCRIPTION:Exhibition: Anne Heinz and Michael Hart: “Material Lab” June 21-July 29 Meet-the-Artists Reception and Gallery Talk Thursday\, June 21st\, 2012; 6-8pm Free and Open to the Public BluSeed is proud to present the wearable art of Anne Heinz and sculptural assemblages of Michael Hart in a collaborative exhibition titled "Material Lab." The display will be at BluSeed from Thursday\, June 21st\, through Sunday\, July 29th\, 2012. A Meet-the-artist Reception and Gallery Talk will be on Thursday\, June 21st\, 2012; 6-8pm Heinz's jewelry uniquely combines handmade pulp-paper with metals. She describes her work: "The juxtaposition of metal and paper explores the impact of lines – an edge\, a boundary\, a path. The curves of the metal are emphasized by the placement against the simple\, geometric shapes of the paper." Michael Hart has been working in glass and photography for 30 years. In a prepared statement\, Hart describes his sculptural assemblages using found objects: "The raw materials Iʼve used in this body of work make up a composite portrait of an artist. Each work represents a long lived relationship with the materials\, their color shape\, texture and the memories they carry and evoke. Distilling the ideas behind the work\, through the use of these materials\, has been my goal and motivation.

SUMMARY:Concert: Mustard's Retreat
DESCRIPTION:BluSeed Proudly Presents: Mustard's Retreat featuring David Tamulevich and Michael Hough Friday May 18th 2012 7:30pm 14.00/12.00 BluMembers http://mustardsretreat.com Thirty plus years may not seem like such a long time in the life of a human being\, a tree\, or a folk song. But in the fickle world of modern music\, where pop stars shy of their 21st birthdays often see their careers dumped into oldies bins\, thirty years is a very long time. So as David Tamulevich and Michael Hough celebrate their 35th Anniversary as Mustard's Retreat\, the same question seemed to burn among aspiring young performers and road-weary old folkies - why you guys? In searching for the answer\, one word comes up again and again\, the simple word "audience." Everything Mustard's Retreat does on a stage is aimed at pleasing\, moving and engaging their audience. Whether singing their own gentle love songs and vivid ballads\, telling tall tales or offering treasures from America's vast traditional song bag\, a Mustard's Retreat show always feels like it's designed for the people who have come to see them that day\, in that coffeehouse\, school\, concert hall or festival. Audiences sense this from the moment David and Michael hit the stage\, are drawn to it like hungry kids to Sunday supper and reward it the best way they know how. They come to see Mustard's Retreat again and again. And again. "Mustard's Retreat represents everything that is best about folk music. Their music is community music. It comes from our common roots and traditions\, pays tribute to those roots and traditions and expands on them. It is music that speaks to people’s hearts and lives and binds them together as an audience." -Garnet Rogers

DESCRIPTION:Renowned Weaver Donna Foley presents 7 class weaving workshop Monday’s: 6pm-9pm Dates: March 19\, 26; April 16th\, 23rd\, 30th and May 7th & 14th Cost: 200.00 plus material BluSeed Studios is proud to host renowned weaver Donna Foley and a 7 class weaving workshop to commence on Monday’s\, beginning on March 19 and running through May 14th. This series is open to beginner and novice weavers. Several types of looms will be available to participants including rigid heddle\, tapestry and 4-harness table and floor looms. The classes will meet on Monday evenings from 6pm-9pm. The dates for the weaving classes are March 19\, 26; April 16th\, 23rd\, 30th and May 7th & 14th. The cost for this session is 200.00 plus a approximate 40.00- 60.00 material fee depending on chosen projects. In this class\, the participants will begin with learning the basics of setting up and weaving on a rigid heddle loom\, a fairly simple loom with alot of possibilities.. First projects could be a tablerunner\, bag or wall hanging. The student will then go onto another project\, either on the same rigid heddle loom or decide to graduate to a 4-harness loom and learn about pattern weaving. Further projects can include scarves\, shawl or possibly a small rug. Materiel fees will depend on the project\, but generally range about $30 - $50/project. If the students have their own suitable yarns\, the materiel fee would be much lower. Donna states\, "My weaving journey began more than 25 years ago with a college course in weaving. Soon thereafter\, I had a loom\, spinning wheel and a flock of sheep and I have been spinning\, dyeing and weaving ever since. In the mid-nineties I opened Four Directions Weaving. I weave rugs and wall hangings from my custom-spun yarn as well as runners\, throws\, scarves and shawls from a variety of beautiful yarns. I specialize in "weaving green" which includes using organic or sustainable yarns\, & natural dyes from plants. I have been teaching classes in weaving\, spinning & natural dyeing to both children and adults since 1998." Class size is limited so call to reserve your place in this worthwhile class. You man contact BluSeed Studios at 518-891-3799 or visit us at www.bluseedstudios.org BluSeed Studios is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to provide space where artists have the opportunity to experiment\, diverge\, exhibit and perform; to move ideas and aesthetics forward; to share this diversity with the community.

Their exhibition titled\, “Between Influence”\, will run through April 15th 2012. Artistic Director Carol Marie Vossler guarantees\, “This is an exhibition that captures the spirit of the Artist-n-Residence program here at BluSeed!” Joanna Merry is Joanna Merry graduated from SUNY Plattsburgh in May 2011 with her BFA in Ceramics and Printmaking. After graduation\, she spent the summer traveling in order to partake in various programs and work exchange opportunities at numerous art schools and centers. Among these were Penland School of Crafts\, Alfred University and Watershed Center for the Ceramic Arts. Joanna has assisted and taught several children’s workshops over the past couple years including the 21st century program and Monday ceramics classes to children of the Ted Kay Center in Plattsburgh. This past October she joined BluSeed as an artist in residence. Sacha Sanger is an alumna of Plattsburgh State’s Fine Art program with a concentration in both ceramics and printmaking. During the fall\, she completed an apprenticeship with Moravian Pottery and Tile Works\, a working history museum creating tiles in the American Arts & Crafts tradition. Sacha joined BluSeed as an artist in Residence in December. Sanger & Merry both state\, “The meaning of “Between Influence” captures where we stand in our art making. Not have we landed at BluSeed between our influences of Plattsburgh State and the bewildering art world\, but we realize the influence we have on one another. “Between Influence”\, echoes our prior interests in human connection and our current analogies of human disposition.” BluSeed Studios’ Artist in Residence Program is designed to provide a rich environment for artists seeking the opportunity to work independently to explore specific ideas or techniques to build their portfolio and skills. Working within an organization whose mission is “to provide space where artists have the opportunity to experiment\, diverge\, exhibit\, and perform; to move ideas and aesthetics forward; to share this diversity with the community\,” residents have access to a broad range of equipment\, space and resources to pursue their goals. BluSeed has proven to be a valuable connection to the community and the larger art world for those who have spent time in its residency program. SUMMARY:TAUNY Song & Story Swap!
DESCRIPTION:TAUNY Song & Story Swap! Thursday\, March 8 7 to 8:30 pm Free and open to the public Anyone with a song to sing or a story to tell is invited to join TAUNY – Traditional Arts in Upstate New York – for the first Song & Story Swap in their mud season series. The swap is free and open to the public\, and will take place on Thursday\, March 8\, from 7 to 8:30 pm\, at BluSeed Studios in Saranac Lake. The event will feature a guest performance by Lee Knight and a round-robin session where all are invited to share songs\, stories\, and poems learned from their family or community. Songs and stories about the Adirondacks are particularly welcome. Lee Knight\, a Saranac Lake native who now makes his home in North Carolina\, is an accomplished singer and multi-instrumentalist who has performed throughout the eastern U.S. and internationally. He has been a researcher and collector of traditional songs and stories of the Adirondacks and the Appalachians since his teenage years. Knight was a friend of folk song collector Marjorie Lansing Porter\, who recorded hundreds of Adirondack songs and ballads in lumber and mining camps during the 1940s and ‘50s. Knight will perform songs he learned from her collection\, accompanying himself on guitar\, fretless banjo\, dulcimer\, Cherokee flute\, and mouth bow. TAUNY\, a nonprofit organization headquartered in Canton\, is dedicated to showcasing the folk culture and living traditions of New York's North Country. With the swaps\, TAUNY hopes to encourage participatory entertainment and music-making in the region\, in a manner reminiscent of traditional gatherings in parlors\, kitchens\, grange halls\, and hotel and tavern barrooms. Within living memory\, such occasions would have occurred nearly weekly in the Adirondacks. The events will be informal\, and everyone is welcome to participate\, including those who do not consider themselves to be “performers” or who just wish to listen. With the permission of those present\, material shared by those in attendance will be recorded\, added to TAUNY’s archival collection\, and edited for posting on TAUNY’s website. Other swaps are scheduled for Thursday\, March 9\, at the Lapland Lake Nordic Vacation Center in Benson\, featuring Ermina Pincombe and Dave Ruch\, and Saturday\, April 21\, at the Adirondack Folk School in Lake Luzerne\, featuring Colleen Cleveland. The Song & Story Swaps are possible thanks to generous underwriting from The Glenn and Carol Pearsall Adirondack Foundation\, dedicated to improving the quality of life for year-round residents of the Adirondack Park (www.pearsallfoundation.org). SUMMARY:Concert: Monsterbuck, Brian Dewan Opening
DESCRIPTION: Monsterbuck Performs at Bluseed Studios January 28\, 7pm\, Saturday $12 admission http://www.mrsfisk.com/monsterbuck http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y1KD25yNIU8 Willing to stray from their regular base of operations in Upper Jay\, Monsterbuck will perform at Bluseed Studios on Saturday\, January 28th\, at 7pm. Chris Kowanko is Monsterbuck’s songwriter and frontman\, accompanying himself on guitar and keyboards\, with the Renderer brothers—Scott and Byron—providing the rhythmic foundation. Guitarist Drew Sprague will join the band for the Bluseed show. The Renderers run the Upper Jay Upholstery Shop during the day\, which morphs into the Recovery Lounge at night. Impresario Scott hosts and programs\, while Byron runs sound for live music and community theatre. They attract a devoted following due to a word-of-mouth buzz. It just so happens that their band project is a relatively undiscovered gem. It was at a NYC theatre where Chris met the actor & future drummer for Monsterbuck\, Scott. Renderer introduced Kowanko to the then-unknown producer Steve Fisk (Nirvana\, Low\, Wedding Present). Kowanko and Fisk recorded “Air Mail\,” a demo that attracted the attention of legendary Patti Smith guitarist Lenny Kaye\, who went on to produce Kowanko’s first solo release on a major label—the now-defunct Morgan Creek. Kowanko's second release\, “Spell\,” reignited his former collaboration with producer Steve Fisk. Although independently released\, Spell would go on to rank in CMJ’s top 100 for radio airplay in the fall of 2001. The songs on Monsterbuck’s two releases\, “Jockey Down” and "Land of Makebelievers\," range from spare acoustic landscapes to texturally rhythmic garage rock. Though the band is plugged-in\, they exude a relaxed\, natural-in-their-skin vibe. During the summer of 2011\, the band held monthly public rehearsals in their newly-renovated Lower Lounge space in Upper Jay. The Hurricane Irene floods inundated the lounge and washed the improvements away sparing the original performance/work space upstairs to reopen for business. Opening the evening at Bluseed Studios will be musical bard\, Brian Dewan. This fourth appearance at Bluseed will feature original songs performed with his newly-repaired electric zither that he constructed from 88 harpsichord strings\, and played in his recent appearance with the Raymond Scott Orchestrette at Lincoln Center. A Seward’s Folly Production\, the concert celebrates the promoter’s 50th birthday.

SUMMARY:Exhibit: Glen Rogers & Carol Marie Vossler
DESCRIPTION:The Language of Nature: Monotypes & Unique prints by Glen Rogers & Carol Marie Vossler w/special guest poet Vince Quatroche & Dan Berggren Sound & Word Performance Date: November 11\, 2011 5:30pm Galley Talk & Sound/Word Collaboration at 7pm Print Exhibition: Language of Nature runs through December 11\, 2011 Place: BluSeed Studios – 24 Cedar St. Saranac Lake\, NY bluseedstudios.org BluSeed Studios is extending the exhibition “The Language of Nature”. Visual artists Rogers & Vossler will be presenting monotypes and unique prints that were inspired by sacred spaces and places found in nature. The exhibition\, “The Language of Nature” exhibition will now run through January 20\, 2012. Glen Rogers and Carol Vossler met two years ago during the International Print Exchange between here home in Mazatlan Mexico and Saranac Lake. Glen Rogers is an internationally acclaimed artist whose art includes paintings\, prints\, drawings\, and public sculpture. Her work is inspired by ancient symbols carved on rocks and cave walls around the world. She uses archetypal symbols that are informed by sacred geometry and the infinite forms in nature. Her work\, which has an undeniable feminine quality\, is both mystical and meditative and transcends into the spiritual realm. Vossler is founder of BluSeed Studios and a full time faculty member on North Country Community College. In this particular print series she states\, “This newest body of work\, includes traditional and contemporary printmaking methods”. “The images themselves continue to question our place in the environment and how our encroachment reveals the impact of our presence\, no matter how minimal”. “In nature\, there are signs informing us what is happening - some are etched in shells and stones\, some in the wind and others\, such as a found shark\, rotting on the beach with it’s jaw missing.” “Convention has taught many that what and how we react to these signs is an individual choice but I believe that time is over and it is time to start acting collectively to solve the environmental problems we face.” BluSeed Studios is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to provide space where artists have the opportunity to experiment\, diverge\, exhibit and perform; to move ideas and aesthetics forward; to share this diversity with the community. SUMMARY:Benefit Play: The Belle of Amherst
DESCRIPTION:The Belle of Amherst by William Luce Critically acclaimed one-woman play depicting the life of 19th Century poet Emily Dickinson with Kathleen Recchia A Benefit for Town of Jay Hurricane Irene Victims www.HelpJayNY.org December 10th at 7pm Suggested donation 10.00 For more information call: 518-946-8323 Original direction by Tyler Nye; Roduced by special arrangement with SAMUEL FRENCH\, INC. Underwritten\, in part\, by BluSeed Studios\, The Book & Blanket B&B and Ward Lumber Play Celebrating One of America’s Greatest Nature Poets to be Performed as a Fundraiser for Survivors of Tropical Storm Irene SARANAC LAKE\, NY—“Nature – the Gentlest Mother is\,/Impatient of no Child – /The feeblest – or the waywardest – /Her Admonition mild.” America’s foremost female poet\, Emily Dickinson—like Wordsworth and the other great Romantics—is also one of the world’s greatest literary observers of nature. It seems especially fitting then that William Luce’s one-woman play celebrating the life and poetry of Dickinson\, The Belle of Amherst\, will be presented in a special performance benefiting residents of the Town of Jay who experienced the devastating effects of Tropical Storm Irene—a moment frozen in time\, when Mother Nature was neither gentle nor patient nor her “admonition” mild. The show\, which will take place at 7 pm\, Saturday\, December 10th—Emily Dickinson’s 181st birthday—at BluSeed Studios\, 24 Cedar Street (off NYS Route 86)\, Saranac Lake\, features Kathleen Recchia\, reprising a role she has performed and toured to such New York State venues as the Kent-Delord House Museum in Plattsburgh and the Bridge Theater in Whitehall\, to considerable acclaim. Of her performance at the Old Mill Art Studio in Elizabethtown\, Tim Palkovic\, former Chair of the SUNY Plattsburgh Theatre Department wrote\, “One of the deep pleasures of theatre is getting lost in that zone between the actor and the character. I could not distinguish what was you and what was the characterization. You took me to a sacred place; a profound pleasure for me.” The suggested donation for the performance is $10 per person\, and all proceeds from the evening will go to the Jay Flood Relief Fund\, which can also be accessed at www.HelpJayNY.org\, where additional tax-deductible donations can be made. The performance is underwritten\, in part\, by BluSeed Studios\, The Book & Blanket Bed & Breakfast in Jay\, and Ward Lumber of Jay and Malone\, NY. Seeking to Build on the Outpouring of Volunteer Help and Donations The performance of The Belle of Amherst is the latest in a series of fundraising events initiated by or done in association with the Jay Flood Relief Committee (JFRC)\, a group of residents from the Towns of Jay and Keene who have volunteered their time to respond to the needs of their neighbors in the wake of Tropical Storm Irene and the subsequent flooding. The committee is an outgrowth of work that began immediately after the storm\, including community kitchens at the Brookside Motor Inn in Upper Jay and the Town of Jay Community Center in Au Sable Forks that provided meals for area residents who lost power or were flooded out of their homes and a town-wide firewood drive. Once the committee formed\, it helped encourage the establishment of the Jay Flood Relief Fund\, which is administered by Adirondack Community Trust (ACT) via Network for Good (in addition to online contributions at www.HelpJayNY.org\, tax-deductible donations can also be made via checks mailed to: Adirondack Community Trust\, P.O. Box 288\, Lake Placid NY 12946). Since the disaster struck\, the JFRC has helped raise thousands of dollars through such events as an acoustic concert held at the Amos and Julia Ward Theatre in Jay\, sponsored by the Jay Entertainment & Music Society (JEMS); an outdoor pig roast at the Brookside Motor Inn; and a concert at Upper Jay’s newest venue\, The Church. Funds have already begun to be disbursed to people most affected by the storm\, via a committee set up by the Town of Jay. However\, the concern remains that\, given the extent of the damage and the time of year\, more financial help is needed to help flood survivors rebuild or explore other available options for putting their lives back together. “People have been incredibly generous—both in terms of the outpouring of volunteer help we saw right after the storm and in reaching down deep into their pockets to donate whatever they could\,” said JFRC member Eric Klotzko. “But the need is still there. The Township of Jay sustained the greatest amount of devastation\, by far\, among all towns in Essex County and is up there among the hardest-hit communities in New York State—with damage estimates in the millions. And now winter is at our doorstep.” One hope is that\, with events such as the performance of The Belle of Amherst in Saranac Lake\, people in the wider North Country community who may not have already donated to the fund or supported one of the previous events\, will attend the show and/or consider making a direct donation to the Jay Flood Relief Fund. “The Town of Jay is one of the most beautiful communities in the New York State\, with wonderful cultural and recreational attributes and—like so many towns in the North Country—truly wonderful people\,” said Heather Morgan\, another committee member. “We’re just asking for a little more help to make our town whole again.” To explore ways you can help in the recovery effort or for more information on the JFRC\, please e-mail the committee at jayrelieffund@klotnet.net or contact Eric Klotzko at (518) 946-7655 or eric@klotnet.com or Jay Ward at (518) 524-0545 or jayward@wardlumber.com. Vince Quatroche and Dan Berggren have been friends and collaborators for over 30 years\, and for one night the urban poet and rural musician will intersect again at BluSeed. Together their musical stories and spoken word soundscapes explore shadows\, echoes and promises\, broken and kept. The exhibition\, will host a meet the artist reception begins at 5:30pm and the gallery talk and performance will begin at 7:00pm. “The Language of Nature” exhibition will run through December 11\, 2011. “In nature\, there are signs informing us what is happening - some are etched in shells and stones\, some in the wind and others\, such as a found shark\, rotting on the beach with it’s jaw missing.” “Convention has taught many that what and how we react to these signs is an individual choice but I believe that time is over and it is time to start acting collectively to solve the environmental problems we face.” Dan Berggren has been collecting\, writing\, and singing folk music of the Adirondacks for the past 30 years. He grew up in the mountains on the land farmed by his mother’s family and worked in the woods. on a forest ranger’s crew and a survey crew. Hearing stories and songs from local friends and neighbors\, Dan has developed a style that captures the spirit of the mountains and nature that will add signigicace to this new exhibition; BluSeed Studios is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to provide space where artists have the opportunity to experiment\, diverge\, exhibit and perform; to move ideas and aesthetics forward; to share this diversity with the community. SUMMARY:The Honey Dewdrops
DESCRIPTION: The Honey Dewdrops Return! September 24th 7:30pm 14.00/12.00 BluSeed Member Laura Wortman and Kagey Parrish make their home in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains in Charlottesville\, Virginia. The couple has been playing music in some capacity for over 15 years\, but honed in on their natural duet abilities 7 years ago when they met for the first time in college. It was their love of folk music that brought them together and has since taken them out on the road to tour fulltime as the award-winning duet they are today. Writing and singing in the veins of folk and old country music\, the Dewdrops entwine harmony singing with tight instrumentation and craft songs that are simple and fine-tuned. Theirs are new songs from the southern mountains that ring with originality. After their appearance and first place win on a 2008 talent show broadcast of NPR’s “A Prairie Home Companion”\, the Dewdrops began their careers as songwriters and have since released two critically acclaimed albums\, “If the Sun Will Shine” (2009) and “These Old Roots” (2010) both of which have charted at the #1 and #2 positions on the Folk DJ-L Charts for 2010.

SUMMARY:Parallels and Tangents - Tina LaMour and O. Gustavo Plascencia Aug 2011
DESCRIPTION:Parallels and Tangents - Tina LaMour and O. Gustavo Plascencia Aug 2011 Traditionally the collaborative process is in the production of new work. However\, we have approached this show as a form of collaboration after the fact. Through our interactions we have realized the similarities in the content of our individual work. Despite our disparate backgrounds\, common threads are evident as we both approach the representation of the content using different methods. Through the parallels we have discovered the tangents in our individual visual languages. Despite the differences of where the work is coming from it embodies common threads in the references to family\, faith\, solitude and loss. [thumbnails]

SUMMARY:Pulp Painting
DESCRIPTION:Printmaking Studio Workshops: Workshop will follow Monday’s demo outline. You do not have to participate on Monday workshop. There will be a brief review and demo June 29th- Pulp Painting Pulp painting is an exciting aspect of paper making where you can apply colored pulps to a couched sheet of paper. The sheet of paper acts as a canvas and specially prepared pulps become paint. You can apply the pulp paints by squirting\, spooning\, or tossing them onto the paper. By using stencils\, cookie cutters or paint scrapers you can create crisp images or designs. Pulp paint can be used to enhance and anchor an object you plan to embed into the paper.

Keela Dates is the executive director of Reason2Smile. With the support of her board members and other enthusiastic individuals\, Keela works daily to provide both immediate and long-term financial stability for Jambo Jipya School. She does this through connecting with donors; producing a monthly newsletter; presenting to schools\, churches\, civic organizations; etc. Keela is also the liaison between Jambo Jipya and the Reason2Smile Board of Directors.

SUMMARY:Frankenpine - 'Live at BluStage'
DESCRIPTION:'Live at BluStage' concert series presents Frankenpine - CD release party! Saturday\, March 12\, 2011\, 7:30pm Admission: $14/ $12 for BluSeed Members Call 518-891-3799 for advance reservations Frankenpine is a Brooklyn-based string band with roots reaching from the subway platforms of the city up the Hudson Valley to the crooked mountains of the Adirondacks. The banjo and fiddle in its ranks give it a touch of bluegrass\, but the band’s original music draws on a wide range of influences—everything from blues to gypsy jazz to rock to old-time. Its lyrics are similarly eclectic\, exploring themes of loss and ambition; telling the stories of outlaws and the outspoken. The result is a set of songs with propulsive rhythms and searing solos\, tight arrangements and soaring vocal harmonies The band formed as a trio in 2007 and has since grown to include Kim and Matthew Chase\, Liz Bisbee\, Ned P. Rauch\, Colin DeHond and sometimes Andy Mullen. They play acoustic and resonator guitars\, mandolin\, bass\, fiddle\, harmonica\, banjo\, accordion\, percussion and whatever else is within reach. The band has appeared on WNYC\, WKCR (Columbia University’s radio station) and North Country Public Radio and performs regularly around New York City. Frankenpine recently completed a year-long residency at the Lakeside Lounge\, in the East Village\, and released its debut full-length album\, The Crooked Mountain\, in December of 2010.
