“The Shirt Off Our Backs!” will be the thematic inspiration for imagery in the first two workshops: Nontoxic Printmaking by Larry Poole and Pulp Painting led by visiting artist Jill Littlewood. The final workshop Ethiopian Bookbinding will be taught by Bob Walp. All participants will be invited back to show their work in a special exhibition titled: “The Shirt off our Backs”!

The non-toxic intaglio printing making class will be taught by local artists Larry Poole. Utilizing BluSeed’s fully equipped print studio, students will learn the photo polymer etching process (which was refined by Keith Howard of RIT) to produce intaglio prints.

Jill Littlewood is an internationally acclaimed book artist and pulp painter from Santa Barbara California. During her 3-week stay at BluSeed Studios, she will be sharing her passion for paper and the versatility of pulp painting. Pulp painting is an emerging specialization in the broader field of handmade paper art, which has been attracting artists of many different disciplines. The art of creating pulp paintings involves the use of specially prepared pulps and applying them to a freshly made sheet of handmade paper. The primary appeal to pulp painting is that it allows the artist to not just work on the paper, but to actually work in the paper itself. Class participants will learn to plan and execute pulp paintings from a variety of colors. Basic principles of design and pulp manipulation will be covered to aid the act of creating paper pieces of personal expression and satisfaction.

Master book artist Robert Walp will lead the “Ethiopian” style bookbinding class. The Ethiopian style binding is based on one of the earliest known examples of a sewn codex, dating from about the 4th century ad. The binding is generally sewn with one or two pairs of needles using a link stitch. A hard cover and elegant spine which exposes the stitching allows these books to lie flat when opened, making them ideal for journals or sketchbooks. No previous experience is necessary for this 2 day workshop!

All workshops will be geared towards the novice and the experienced artist and be open to ages 15 years and older. The workshops will include all necessary materials, instruction, a group critique to discuss the artwork and invitation to show their work in the special exhibition. This special showcase of the artwork made during the workshops is intended for the North Country community. It will allow the residents of the tri-lakes to see a unique exhibition that consists of works produced by community members and the visiting artists.
