BluSeed Studios offers 2010 BluSeedlings Summer Art Youth Program

BluSeed Studios announces 2- one-week art programs for young artists in 3^rd -8^th grades, BluSeedlings (grades 3-5) and the BluSeedlings “Sprouts” (grades 6-8). The program is designed and developed to inspire children to explore and discover art through creative projects in clay, drawing and painting. The program seeks to develop and strengthen creative skills, build self-esteem and confidence, develop a sense of individuality, encourage self-expression, and stimulate imagination in children.

Children’s Art Classes:

BluSeedlings Adventures in Clay & Color:

Class Times: 10am – 12pm

Instructors: Mary Lou Reid & Carol Vossler & Nancy Brossard

Cost: $100.00 per week (scholarships available)

Age: 8-14 (3^rd-8^th grade)

Description:

July 19-23: Adventures in Clay (pottery projects to be picked up July 28) Explores both hand building and wheel throwing through a string of specific projects such as bowl, mug, treasure box, favorite pet and/or wind chime!

July 26-30: Adventures in Color The session will consist of two projects: a 2-day workshop in acrylic painting, and a 3-day creating your own 3-D totem or chair, which the students will then paint!

Animation Fascination:

Class Times: 10am – 12pm

Dates: Wednesday July 14, 21, and 28

Instructor: Rivka Maher

Cost: $65.00

Age: 8-14 (3^rd- 8^th grade)

Description: Experiment with animation in this introductory class through hands on experiences using traditional stop-motion techniques including drawn and cut out animation. Explore timing, balance, weight, and dialogue in basic character creation. The final project will be done the old fashioned way with a flipbook. Improve basic drawing skills and prepare yourself for something cool.

Five artists, Nancy Brossard, John La Falce, Katherine Levin-Lau, Carol Marie Vossler, and Larry Poole, all affiliated with BluSeed Studios in Saranac Lake, NY, recently returned home from Mazatlan, Mexico where they participated in the first phase of a cultural exchange. The second part of the exchange will take place in Saranac Lake from July 13th through July 21st when five artists, Gia Alexander, Mark Jay, Glen Rogers, Lucila Santiago, Rafael Avila Tirado, from Mazatlan will come to BluSeed Studios. During their visit they will work and exchange ideas with area artists at BluSeed Studios. At that time an exhibition of work of all 10 artists will be held in the gallery of BluSeed Studios. The opening is planned for July 15th as part of that month’s Saranac Lake Art Walk. The exhibit will run through September 11th.

The program entitled, *Intercambio Gráfica Printmaking Exchange: NY – Mazatlán *is an exciting exchange of art and ideas between three graphic studios and the10 artists. An exhibition of prints by the artists opened January 21 at the Rubio Gallery at the Angela Peralta Theatre in Mazatlan and runs through March 1. The work being exhibited includes etchings, monotypes, hand-made paper and linoleum block printing. The Cultura of Mazatlan, Glen Rogers Studio, and Bluseed Studios sponsor the project. The exchange is just another aspect of BluSeed Studios’ mission “to provide space where artists have the opportunity to experiment, diverge, exhibit, and perform; to move ideas and aesthetics forward; to share this diversity with the community.”

From January 18th through the 25th the artists affiliated with BluSeed Studios worked in the studio of Glen Rogers, held demonstrations, and exchanged ideas with the students and teachers of the Centro Municipal de Artes housed at the Angela Peralta Theatre. Professor/artist Lucila Santiago hosted the artists from New York in her classes to share their expertise in printmaking.

During their visit to Mazatlan, the artists from BluSeed studios were the guest of the Cultura who graciously arranged for their housing during the visit. The favor of hosting will be returned when the Mazatlan artists visit in July. The exchange was the developed by Katherine Levin-Lau, Glen Rogers, and Carol Marie Vossler. Levin-Lau and Rogers had shared studio space earlier in the careers. In addition to the activities at BluSeed Studios in July the group plans on visiting one or two other printmaking centers in the region. Pat’s Bio

From swing to jazz to bottleneck blues to folk, Grammy-winning acoustic guitarist Pat Donohue plays it all with a flourish of artistry and melodic inspiration. Chet Atkins called Pat one of the greatest finger pickers in the world today; Leo Kottke called his playing “haunting.”

Pat is certainly one of the most listened to finger pickers in the world. As the guitarist for the Guys All-Star Shoe Band of Minnesota Public Radio’s A Prairie Home Companion, Pat gets to show off his savvy licks and distinctive original songs to millions of listeners each week.

His decade-long association with Garrison Keillor’s popular program has led to some unusual gigs: There was the after-show club date in Berlin, when Wynton Marsalis showed up to sit in with Pat and the Prairie Home band. Or playing music on camera for the Prairie Home Companion movie with director Robert Altman and stars Meryl Streep, Lily Tomlin, Kevin Kline, John C. Reilly, Woody Harrelson and Tommy Lee Jones.

Besides the weekly radio broadcasts, Pat plays about 30 concerts a year nationwide and teaches at such popular music camps as Augusta Heritage Center and Rocky Mountain Fiddle Camp.

Pat’s musical tastes are eclectic. Though he considers himself foremost a folk guitarist, Pat’s influences are rooted in bluesmen Blind Blake, Robert Johnson, Charlie Parker, Duke Ellington, Muddy Waters and Miles Davis. He manages to blend jazz and blues with folk, and the mix is seamless. Over the years he has captivated audiences with his unique original compositions, dazzling instrumentals and humorous song parodies, including Sushi-Yucki and Would You Like to Play the Guitar?

Honors include a 2005 Grammy for his participation on Pink Guitar, a compilation of Henry Mancini tunes on acoustic guitar, several Minnesota Music Awards, and the title of 1983 National Finger Picking Guitar Champion. His original tunes have been recorded by Chet Atkins, Suzy Bogguss and Kenny Rogers. Pat has also been a featured performer at major music festivals including the Newport, Telluride and Philadelphia Folk Festivals. Pat joins a legendary list of notables, as The Martin Guitar Company recently introduced a Custom Signature Edition Series OM-30DB guitar designed to his specifications.

Pat has been obsessed with the guitar since he first picked one up at age 12 and began learning simple chords and melodies from a Pete Seeger instructional book. His background as a drummer in a garage rock band helped with the transition and he never looked back. As a youth, the St. Paul, Minnesota native pestered guitarists playing at Twin Cities coffee houses and blues venues, seeking tips on playing. Borrowing bits and pieces of the styles of finger picking pioneers he admired, he taught himself to play, building a repertoire flavored by Blind Blake, Django Reinhart and Chet Atkins.

“I was very lucky to see some of the old-timers that aren’t around anymore,” says Pat. “The University of Minnesota had summer concerts in the early 70s and I got to see Lightnin’ Hopkins, Big Joe Williams and Jesse Fuller. I wasn’t shy about going up to them and trying to befriend them and find out what I could about playing the blues. By and large, they were very accommodating. Big Joe Williams invited me to his hotel and we wound up playing guitar together.”

Aside from his music CDs, Pat also has two instructional videos and a concert video on Stefan Grossman’s Vestapol Videos, which not only display his guitar wizardry, but also feature the warmth and humor he brings to his live performances. Pat recently recorded an instructional DVD with buddy Mike Dowling, “A Guide to Two Guitar Jamming,” or Learning to Play Well with Others. Produced by Homespun Tapes, the DVD comes with tablature and is nearly two hours of strategies, examples, and advice on making good music together, no matter your playing level.

SPECIAL EVENT: CALLING ALL WOMEN

The IRIS Group is showing new work at BluSeed this summer, and undertaking another collecting event June 17 from 4 – 7 pm.

IRIS invites women to be a part of their ongoing project that involves writing, mixed media and photography. The activities from the day’s event will become part of this ongoing cumulative exhibition. On exhibition will be works by several members of IRIS, objects accumulated, and a projection showing images of women photographed in five years of projects. Participating artists are Laura Hair, Holly McClellan, Janice Prebble, Margaret Rodgers and Sally Thurlow.

And – – – IRIS is COLLECTING

· An object of any kind, invested with personal or symbolic meaning. The objects contribute towards an installation, which becomes part of thelarger display.

· ON-site photographic documentation and hand or foot prints of (willing) women

· Writings by women in response to a series of questions.

John La Falce was born and raised in Buffalo New York and has been an artist in residence at Bluseed Studios since last summer. His work encompasses an array of media and projects an “open approach” in style, content and purpose. He received his BFA in Painting in 2002 from Buffalo State College. In recent years he has been traveling with his art among these projects being the “Combat Paper Project” where he is a collaborator and participating artist working with returning Iraqi veterans.

Michael Hough and David Tamulevich formed the folk duo Mustard's Retreat in 1974 in Ann Arbor, MI. Both men were cooks, Connecticut natives, songwriters, and former members of church choirs. As Mustard's Retreat, the two friends performed in front of an audience for the first time at The Ark on one of the coffeehouse's open mic nights. Hough is accomplished on the Autoharp, guitar, and bass. Tamulevich lends his skills with the harmonica, guitar, penny whistle, and dulcimer.
